Driving in Spain & France - Autopistas & Autoroutes
Driving
The road system throughout Catalunya (Catalonia) is generally very good, easy to use and well sign posted. If time is of the essence then the quickest way around is by Autopista in Spain or Autoroute in France, though if you’re doing a lot of mileage then this can get expensive as they are almost always toll roads with the exception of some city ring roads. A list of all tolls on Spanish Catalan roads can be found on the autopistas website and French toll roads on the autoroutes website.
If you have more time and want to see more of the country then the best option is to avoid the next busiest roads (the big national routes prefixed with an N and marked in red on most maps) as these can get very busy with lorries avoiding tolls and take instead N, C or D routes marked in yellow.
If you’re hiring a car then the most convenient and often the only practical way, though not always the cheapest, is to pick one up at the airport. Check all the companies prices online and always check for additional insurance premiums which may not be highlighted to you until your arrival.
Bus services
There are numerous bus companies throughout Catalunya and they essentially cater for two types of journey. Firstly within cities you’ll find buses are reliable and the most economical way of getting around, especially outside Barcelona where there is no alternative underground system in any of the cities. Secondly for inter city and long distance travel busses can offer an alternative to the train although often slower. Where you find a gap in the service is that between smaller towns and villages for which a car or the train is essential.
More details can be found on urban busses within our Catalunya city guides. If you want to travel by bus over longer distances check for local companies at the nearest tourist information office.
