Average Temperatures in Barcelona, Girona, Tarragona, Lleida , The Balearics & Andorra

The graphs below show the average temperatures, day and night during an entire month. The average absolute maximum and the average absolute minimum for each area are indicated by the top and bottom of each block of colour. As the maximum and minimum are averages there may be higher or lower temperatures in certain areas, especially inland or mountainous regions. The first graph is for the provinces of Barcelona, Girona, Lleida and Tarragona. The second for Andorra, The Balearics and French Catalunya.

Barcelona province summary

The inland, pre-Pyrenean comarcas of el Berguedà and Osona show the lowest temperatures in winter getting down to -10ºC or lower. The highest temperatures in the high 30’s or sometimes low 40’s, are found in the inland comarcas of l’Alt Penedès, l’Anoia, el Vallès Occidental and el Vallès Oriental usually in July and August.

Girona province summary

As you’d expect the comarcas with the lowest temperatures, regularly -15ºC or lower are the Pyrenean comarcas of el Cerdanya and el Ripollès. The highest in the high 30’s or sometimes low 40’s are usually in la Selva.

Lleida province summary

Due to the huge differences in terrain extremes are found here all year round. In the Pyrenean comarcas of el Pallars Sobirà and la Val d'Aran temperatures of upto -20ºC are common in winter and frosts even in the height of summer. It gets almost as cold in l’Alt Urgell and el Solsonès. Lower land in the south reach the highest summer temperatures with high 30’s or sometimes low 40’s.

Tarragona province summary

Furthest south of all the provinces Tarragona generally has the mildest winter temperatures though it can still reach -8ºC or lower in inland comarcas like la Conca de Barberà and el Priorat. Summer highs in the high 30’s or sometimes low 40’s are most common here too along with la Ribera d’Ebre.

Andorra summary

Andorra has an alpine climate with Mediterranean influences resulting in very cold winters (regularly -10° or lower) and mild to warm summers with maximums of about 26°C though frosts can still occur any time of year depending on altitude.

The Balearics summary

Frost and even more so, snow, is a very rare occurrence on theses islands, the Mediterranean having a warming influence in the winter, resulting in minimum temperatures of about 4 or 5°C, and cooling in the summer with maximums normally no higher than the mid 30’s. The climate on all the islands is very similar although Mallorca and Ibiza are generally a little warmer than Menorca.

French Catalunya summary

Extreme differences in temperature can occur within French Catalunya depending on where you are. The Mediterranean has the greatest influence near the coast and lower lying inland areas and the Pyrenees on the higher and mountainous regions. Summer maximums reach the mid 30’s, occasionally higher and in winter minimum’s of -10°C or lower in the mountains.
